I also have a copy of this book and it has a hard cover. The publisher and copyright are imprinted on this cover. The publisher is McLoughlin Brother New York copyright 1905. Do you have anymore information about this most intriguing reader? Thank you.

That last sentence is a doozy — must end with a moral! The author’s ability to simultaneously romanticize and patronize the subject seems quintessentially Victorian to me. Also a little cringe-inducing.

They are all from Shining Hours, a scrappy Victorian children’s book I found at an estate sale a couple of weeks ago. All the stories have a curious “flavor.”
